Why dogs like to eat grass?

Dogs are one of the animals that eat anything thus you should not be surprised if your Fido has decided to help you with the task of weeding the garden. Dogs have a rather amusing habit of eating grass. Dogs are indiscriminate eaters and you have to be thankful that the dog has decided to eat grass instead of raiding the trash cans or eating its own or other dog’s poop. However, a pet parent that ensures that the pet is given enough nutritious food would be puzzled by the dog’s predilection for grass. Does the glistening dew on the grass appeals to the curious nature of the pet and entice dogs to eat grass?

Wolves are the progenitors of dogs and grass forms a part of a wolf’s diet. Although these dogs in the wild are known to be carnivorous, plants and grasses have supplemented the diet especially when food is scarce. Dogs have formed the habit of eating grass from subsisting on herbivores in the wild. These plant eating preys are totally consumed by dogs so that the grasses, leaves and berries ingested by the prey are also eaten by the dog. Overtime, because of food scarcity, dogs in the wild have developed the habit of eating leaves and grasses.

Modern day dogs have no reason to eat grass. These well loved pets are regularly provided by their owners enough nutritious foods. The dog though would still be seen munching grass as if enjoying the world’s most expensive salad. In spite of the fact that dogs have the reputation of eating anything, the habit of eating grass was explained by dog experts.

It was believed that the habit of eating grass stemmed from the dog’s need to fill up a nutrient deficiency in the diet. Apparently, our four legged friends are aware that they are receiving low quality dog food. Dogs are believed to eat grass to fill up the nutrient deficiency in their diet. Not only do dogs have big appetites, they are not choosy eaters as well.
